23,925 Blantyre Farming Households to Benefit from 2026/27 FISP

Each beneficiary household will receive fertilizer and certified maize seed, with upgraded coupons introduced to curb forgery and unauthorised redemptions.

At least 23,925 farming households in Blantyre District are expected to benefit from the 2026/2027 Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP).
Chief Agriculture Officer for Blantyre District Council, Lusungu Mtokale Banda, disclosed this today during a full council meeting.
She said each household will receive a 50-kilogram bag of NPK basal fertilizer, 50-kilogram bag of urea top-dressing fertiliser, and a 5-kilogram pack of certified maize seed.
Banda added that input coupons for the programme have been upgraded with advanced security features to minimise forgery and prevent unauthorised redemptions

District Commissioner for Blantyre Alex Mdooko, has called for stronger collaboration among government departments, civil society, and local communities to combat corruption, emphasizing that shared responsibility is vital to solving the country’s development challenges.
Mdooko made the appeal on Friday at Lunzu Primary School ground during a joint anti-corruption awareness campaign conducted by Institutional Integrity Committees from various government departments.
He observed that corruption often begins with minor misdeeds at the community level before escalating into systemic graft, highlighting the urgent need for unified action to tackle the problem.
Chairperson for Blantyre District Council Lenzo Kalonga called on the ACB to sustain and expand its anti-corruption campaigns deeper into rural areas to protect grassroots public service delivery.

Blantyre has emerged as the top-performing district in the country during the 2025 Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) Flag Week.
MRCS Blantyre Division Chairperson, Lex Lemani, disclosed this on Tuesday during the district-level launch of the 2026 Flag Week held at the Blantyre District Council offices.
Lemani revealed that the division collected approximately K7 million, surpassing all other districts nationwide.

He attributed the success to the district's exceptional coordination and local support throughout the previous year's campaign.
District Commissioner for Blantyre Alex Mdooko urged the public including the business community to contribute generously to the 2026 initiative.

Mdooko, who also serves as the Patron of the MRCS Blantyre Division also commended the Society for its humanitarian support during floods, droughts, disease outbreaks among others.

community development projects worth 21.6 billion

Blantyre District Council has approved community development project worth 21.6 billion to be implemented under the Constituency Developnment Fund(CDF) for the 2026/27 finacial year.

The fund will support development projects in education,health,transportation,irrigation,and water supply across the districts six constituencies.

Presenting the budget during council meeting on Tuesday at the Blantyre Disatrict Council, Chairperson for the development committee,Akima Mustafa Chipwatali, said each constituency has been allocated 3.6 billion to implement the projects.

Blantyre District Health Office is set to roll out 200 million four days polio vaccination campaign from june 16 to june 19th, targetting more than 482,000 children under the age of 10.
Chief Preventive Health Officer for Blantyre DHO, Innocent Mvula explained on friday during a press briefing that the upcoming campaign is part of nation and region effort to contain polio virus type 2(VDPV2) outbreak.
Mvula said: "Blantyre will see about 1800 health workers conduct vaccinations through door to door visits,health faccilities,school and other vaccination designated centers. The target is to leave no child behind"
